This is one of the best rainbow crafts for kids! It is fun, colorful and easy to make! Plus, your preschool and kindergarten students can practice their scissor skills and strengthen their fine motor skills as they snip each color into smaller pieces. It’s one of the perfect spring crafts for kids… especially as an addition to your St. Patrick’s Day crafts and St. Patrick’s Day activities!

Are you getting tired of the cold, damp weather? Me too! I’m ready for some sunshine! And, what better way to bring on spring than with a little rainbow! This rainbow craft is fun, colorful and easy to make! Plus, your preschool and kindergarten students can practice their scissor skills as they snip each color into smaller pieces. It’s one of the perfect spring crafts for kids… especially as an addition to your St. Patrick’s Day crafts and St. Patrick’s Day activities!

Rainbow Craft Supplies

Let’s get started! Grab your supplies!

  • 1″ strips of construction paper for each color of the rainbow
  • Black construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Cotton balls
  • Glue

Rainbow Poem

Before getting started on our rainbow craft, the students learn a quick poem all about the colors of the rainbow. This little jingle (sung to the tune of “Did You Ever See a Lassie?”) helps them better remember the colors, and in particular, the order of the colors.

I can see a rainbow,
A rainbow,
A rainbow.
I can see a rainbow,
Up high in the sky.

Red and orange and yellow,
And green,
And blue.
Indigo and violet,
Up high in the sky.

You can find this rainbow poem, as well as the daily activities to go with the poem, in my March I Can Read Poetry pack.

Rainbow Craft Directions

For this rainbow craft, I give the students a 1″ strip of each color: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Then, I model how to snip the strips into smaller pieces… great for strengthening fine motor and scissor skills.

Next, we use a glue stick to glue the pieces into an arch shape.

You’ll want to start with the red arc first, and work your way down so that the colors go in order of the rainbow. You can draw the top arch with a white crayon, so the kiddos have a starting place.

We add the cotton balls last. I like to use liquid glue for this.

Last, stand back and admire the uniqueness of each rainbow! Sure to brighten anyone’s day!
