10 Simple Name Crafts for Preschool and Kindergarten
Share this Post
Name crafts provide an excellent avenue for students to identify the letters in their names, as well as sequence the letters in the correct order. These hands-on name crafts are not only great for strengthening fine motor skills, but they also make adorable back-to-school bulletin board displays (if I do say so myself)! Students are able to manipulate everyday classroom materials, as they build and practice their names with these ten simple name crafts!
Book Based Name Crafts
I love to use familiar poems, songs and name books to help students learn the letters of their name.
School Bus
“The Wheels on the Bus” is a classic song/story that most students know and love. For our school bus name craft, we start by learning an interactive poem (sung to the tune “The Wheels on the Bus”), which allows students to practice identifying the beginning letter or number of letters in their name.
Next, we create this name bus craft in which students place one letter of their name in each window on the bus.
Chrysanthemum
Speaking of classics, “Chrysanthemum” is one of the top must-read back to school books! After reading “Chrysanthemum,” we complete one of the Chrysanthemum name crafts found in this name activities pack.
With multiple printable response pages to choose from, you are sure to find a craft that works best for your students.
Students can write their name and draw a self-portrait; or for a more complex version, students can complete the “All About My Name” page.
Coconut Tree
Another must-read back to school book is “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.” After reading this beloved book, the students color each letter of their name and then they sequence them as they add them to their coconut tree craft.
Food Based Name Crafts
Food friendly name crafts are a delicious way for students to practice the letters of their name without the actual use of food in the classroom!
Ice Cream
This ice cream name craft helps students identify the first letter, last letter, number of letters, number of consonants, number of vowels and number of syllables in their name.
Alphabet Name Soup
The “Alphabet Name Soup” craft is not only an adorable name craft, but it also serves as a fun name game as well!
After typing out each student’s name in the editable letter pages (found here), I have students color and cut apart each letter of their name.
Next, I pair each student with someone who has a similar length name and give them a plastic bowl and spoon (optional).
The students mix the letters from their name together as they chant the poem: โAlphabet, alphabet, in a dish. Spell my name, if you wish!โ
The students take turns closing their eyes and scooping up a letter from the bowl. If the letter is in their name, they get to keep the letter. If it is not in their name, they put it back in the bowl and it is their partner’s turn. Students play until one player gets all of the letter from their name and correctly spells their name.
After playing several times, we finally construct our alphabet name soup craft.
Beginning Letter Name Crafts
Learning the beginning letter of our names is an important first step in being able to spell our whole name. Many students take pride in that first letter and are excited to share what letter comes first in their name. These beginning letter name crafts are perfect for preschool students who are just learning to spell their name!
Beginning Letter Mosaic
This beginning letter mosaic name craft is great for strengthening those fine motor, scissor and gluing skills, as students snip colored construction paper and glue the pieces to the first letter of their name.
Once they fill in their beginning letter, they write their name on the strip.
Dot Sticker Beginning Letter Craft
For this beginning letter name craft, students peel and stick dot stickers to the first letter of their name. As an alternative, you could also have students use bingo daubers.
Rainbow Name Crafts
Rainbow name crafts are not only a great way for students to learn the letters of their name, but they are also great for learning the correct color order of a rainbow. Not to mention, all of these rainbow name crafts are great for strengthening fine motor skills!
For each of the rainbow name crafts, cut a 12×18 piece of construction paper in half, which yields a 6×18 piece of paper for each student.
Bingo Dauber Name
Bingo daubers are a fine motor tool favorite among little learners! For this bingo dauber name craft, each student will need a 6×18 piece of construction paper.
In pencil or black marker, write each student’s name. Next, students dab out their name in the color order of the rainbow.
Rainbow Mosaic Name Craft
Similar to the bingo dauber name craft, each student will need a 6×18 piece of white construction paper. Then, you will need to write each name in pencil.
Next, students snip strips of colored construction paper and glue each letter of their name in sequential color order of the rainbow.

As a dedicated Kindergarten teacher for nearly 20 years, I believe the words “fun, play, and creativity” can sit right alongside the words “developmentally appropriate, engaging, and rigorous.” Learning is meant to be fun and messy!
