Learning to spell their own name in order is such an important skill for young learners, and what better way to practice than with a hands-on, colorful craft? Name Books for Preschool and Kindergarten
Before we start our bingo dauber name craft, I like to read a variety of name books. These name books encourage students to celebrate their identities and appreciate their unique names! Here are three of my favorites.
The Name Jar
“The Name Jar” by Yangsook Choi is one of my favorite culturally inclusive name books. It tells the story of a young Korean girl named Unhei who moves to America. She is hesitant to share her name with her new classmates, so she decides to choose an American name from a glass jar. With the help of a friend, Unhei learns that the best name is her own.
Chrysanthemum
“Chrysanthemum” by Kevin Henkes is another one of my favorite name books that explores the themes of self-acceptance and embracing individuality. As the story unfolds, young readers learn to understand the appreciation for the beauty of their own names. My students always enjoy working on these Chrystanthemum name activities during the first week of school.
Becoming Vanessa
“Becoming Vanessa” by Vanessa Brantley-Newton is an inclusive and empathetic story that follows Vanessa on her first day of school. It seems that everything that could go wrong does… even her name is too hard to write. When Vanessa’s mother shares the true meaning behind her name, Vanessa gains the self-confidence she needs to show her classmates the real Vanessa.

Bingo Dauber Name Craft Supplies
Prior to creating the bingo dauber name craft, you will need to gather a few simple supplies you likely already have in your classroom:
Bingo Dauber Name Craft Prep
This bingo dauber name craft is super easy to prep!
First, cut a 12×18 inch piece of white construction paper in half lengthwise to create a 6×18 inch strip for each student.
Next, write each student’s name in pencil or black marker to serve as a guide for students as they dot.
For preschoolers, you may want to write names in all uppercase letters so the letters are more developmentally appropriate.
That’s it—prep is complete!
Bingo Dauber Name Craft Directions
Once your materials are ready, it’s time to create your bright and colorful bingo dauber name craft masterpieces!
Start by modeling how to use the bingo daubers to carefully dot along each letter of their name. Encourage students to fill each letter with dots as they go.
Students can get creative with how they design their names—using rainbow order, creating patterns, or sticking with a single color. No matter what they choose, the results are always vibrant and eye-catching!
This simple activity is perfect for strengthening fine motor muscles while helping students practice recognizing and forming the letters in their name. Plus, it’s easy enough for students to complete with minimal support.
As students finish, display their work around the classroom or create an adorable back to school bulletin board that is sure to brighten your space!
More Name Crafts and Activities
Another name craft that uses similar supplies—and is perfect for strengthening scissor skills and fine motor muscles—is this mosaic name craft made with colorful construction paper rather than bingo daubers.

As a dedicated Kindergarten teacher for nearly 20 years, I believe the words “fun, play, and creativity” can sit right alongside the words “developmentally appropriate, engaging, and rigorous.” Learning is meant to be fun and messy!
