Simple Rainbow Mosaic Name Craft
Learning how to spell one’s name in sequential order is an important developmental skill! One of my favorite name crafts to help students learn the letters of their name is this rainbow mosaic name craft. With this simple mosaic name craft, students strengthen fine motor skills as they practice scissor skills and gluing skills. Not to mention, this name craft makes a great back to school bulletin board display!

Benefits of Mosaic Name Crafts
This mosaic name craft is perfect for the beginning of the year, as it offers a wide range of benefits!
Snipping the colored strips into smaller pieces helps strengthen students’ scissor skills.
They are also able to practice their gluing skills, as they manipulate and glue the colored pieces onto the white sheet of construction paper.

On top of strengthening their fine motor muscles, this simple name craft also promotes visual-spatial relationships and encourages students to listen to and follow directions. Both of which are much needed benefits during the beginning of the year!

Mosaic Name Craft Supplies
Before creating the mosaic name craft, you will need to gather a few supplies which you may already have on hand:
Mosaic Name Craft Prep
Prior to introducing the mosaic name craft to your students, you will want to do some quick prep.
For this craft, I cut a 12×18 piece of white construction paper in half, which leaves a 6×18 piece of paper for each student. Black construction paper also works and helps make the colored letters pop!
Then, I write each student’s name in black marker which will serve as a guide for students.

For preschoolers, you may want to write the names in all uppercase letters so they are more developmentally appropriate.
Once the names are written, I cut one inch strips of assorted colors of construction paper for each color of the rainbow.
For younger students, it can be helpful to snip the strips into smaller pieces so they are ready to go. However, having the kids cut the strips themselves is great scissor cutting practice.
Mosaic Name Craft Directions
After the paper is prepped, it is time to create our mosaic name craft masterpieces!
First, I like to model how to snip each strip of colored paper into smaller pieces. Then, I demonstrate how to glue each piece of paper onto each letter of my name, overlapping as I go.

We review the color order of the rainbow, as well as discuss what to do if we have more than seven letters in our name and what to do if we have less.

With more than seven letters in our name, we repeat the colors. With less, we just understand that all of the colors won’t be used and that’s okay.

As students finish, I like to display them throughout the classroom. They also make a great back to school bulletin board display!
