Editable Picture Name Puzzles for Name Practice
Share this Post
Name activities play a crucial role in the early development of preschool and kindergarten students. These picture name puzzles for name practice provide an excellent foundation for letter recognition and phonemic awareness, laying the groundwork for future reading and writing success. At the beginning of each year, I create these name puzzles for my students. The picture provides just the right amount of support for those students who need a little extra practice sequencing the letters in their name. Not only are they self-correcting, but they also help build left to right progression. The kiddos absolutely love seeing their picture as they assemble their name. Plus, creating these picture name puzzles is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Step 1: Insert the Picture
Simply click the picture icon to insert your student’s picture. Horizontal pictures work best.
I like to take a picture of each student on the first day of school, so I can use it for this name activity and a variety of other purposes throughout the school year.
Step 2: Edit the Name
Then, highlight each letter to edit the name on the picture name puzzles.
Add any name from 2-15 letters!
Step 3: Print the Picture Name Puzzles
Last, print the name puzzles on card stock. I like to laminate them for extra durability.
Cut the name puzzles into strips using my favorite paper cutter that will save you SO much time!
That’s it! Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!
Storing the Picture Name Puzzles
I like to have students keep their name puzzles in their book box, so they can easily access them to practice over and over again!
You can store the puzzles inside a poly zippered pouch, plastic pencil box or even a Ziploc baggie.
Using the Picture Name Puzzles
Once we have practiced assembling the name puzzles together, most students can easily use them independently.
This simple name activity is perfect for centers, morning work or as a fast finisher activity. Parents also love these personal, keepsake name puzzles for at-home name practice!

As a dedicated Kindergarten teacher for nearly 20 years, I believe the words “fun, play, and creativity” can sit right alongside the words “developmentally appropriate, engaging, and rigorous.” Learning is meant to be fun and messy!
