Preschool and Kindergarten Graduation Read Alouds
Graduating from preschool or kindergarten is bittersweet! Saying goodbye to friends, a classroom they loved, and their teacher can bring on some unsettling feelings for young learners.
Many schools celebrate the wonderful memories and academic success throughout the school year with a Preschool Graduation or Kindergarten Graduation.
This end of the year graduate craft is perfect to display at the ceremony!
Before creating our graduates, I read a few of my favorite graduation read alouds.
End of the year books are a great way to build connections and get students excited about advancing to the next grade level.
Three of my favorite preschool graduation and kindergarten graduation books include: The Night Before Kindergarten Graduation, The Berenstein Bears’ Graduation Day, and Goodbye Preschool, Hello Kindergarten.
Graduate Craft Prep
Prepping this preschool and kindergarten graduation craft is simple and quick!
Three differentiated craft options are included, allowing you to easily customize the graduate craft to best fit the needs of each of your students.
Use just one page as a single writing prompt, stack and staple the pages to create a book, or create a flip book with the included pages.
Once you determine which writing option you will use, it is time to prep the graduation craft and writing pages.
For the graduate craft, you will want to print the pieces on colored paper or card stock.
To make the graduates more personalized, you can print them on your school colors!
You can also choose the print and color option, where your students color their graduate with crayons and markers.
Finally, print the writing pages on regular copy paper. Simply select the pages that work best for your students.
Graduate Craft Directions
After the pages are prepped, it is time to introduce the graduate craft to your students.
If you are choosing to complete multiple pages, I recommend working on two-three pages a day.
As I introduce a new page, I have several students share what they plan to write and draw. This can be done as a whole group, or in pairs.
I also model each page, demonstrating how to keep the words and picture inside the thick, black line so they do not get cut off when assembling the craft.
Once we have completed each writing page, it is time to cut them out and save them for later.
Next, it is time to assemble our graduate craft. If you pre-cut all the pieces, students need to simply follow along as you demonstrate how to assemble with glue.
If you did not pre-cut the pieces, model how to cut out each piece before assembling the craft.
The final step is to attach the writing prompt page(s).
Graduate Craft Bulletin Board
I like to set aside time for each student to share their graduate craft. You can do this over the course of a few days during whole group, morning meeting, or closing circle. You can also have students simply share with a partner.
After students have had a chance to share, I display each student’s graduation craft on our end of the year bulletin board for everyone to enjoy during our Kindergarten Graduation ceremony.
Before the last day of school, I take down each graduate craft and send them home as a treasured keepsake!

As a dedicated Kindergarten teacher for nearly 20 years, I believe the words “fun, play, and creativity” can sit right alongside the words “developmentally appropriate, engaging, and rigorous.” Learning is meant to be fun and messy!
