100th Day Necklace without the Stress
I have always loved the 100th Day of School! This monumental day marks 100 days of learning, so I always like to make the 100th Day as special as possible for my kiddos. Every year, we celebrate with a party that spans across the entire day and sometimes into the next. Before the celebration begins, I set up a variety of 100th Day of School activities for the students to complete during center rotations. One of my all time favorites is our 100th Day necklace!
Over the years, I have learned a thing or two about making this station more seamless… and, I am excited to share these five easy tips for making this 100th day necklace without the stress!
1. Count Fruit Loops using a 100th Day necklace counting mat.
Using a ten frames counting mat is the easiest way I’ve found for kiddos to count and keep track of all 100 Fruit Loops. I like to have the students pick one color of cereal for each group of ten. By grouping them by 10s, the students can easily count all the way to 100 without the overwhelm.
2. Use ribbon to string the 100th Day necklace.
Selecting the right type of string, or ribbon in this case, makes a huge difference. In the past, I have used yarn for this necklace… but, after a few pieces of cereal were added, the string would start to fray.
I have found that using curling ribbon works best, but if you already have yarn on hand, no stress. You can still use it! Simply dip the end of yarn or string into some glue and let dry.
You will need approximately 4 feet of ribbon for each student.
3. Tape one end of the ribbon.
In order to help prevent the Fruit Loops from sliding off the end, tape one end of the ribbon to the table.
4. Write students’ names on the tape.
Add a piece of painter’s tape or masking tape to each student’s necklace with their name on it. Then, you can easily fold the tape over and know whose necklace is whose.
5. Place a tray under the 100th Day necklace work mat.
Put a tray or cookie sheet under each student’s necklace and ten frames, so they can easily carry it to a new location. This is also a great trick in the event that a student is unable to finish in time or if you have to pause to go to a special.
You can easily stack the trays for another time (or day).

As a dedicated Kindergarten teacher for nearly 20 years, I believe the words “fun, play, and creativity” can sit right alongside the words “developmentally appropriate, engaging, and rigorous.” Learning is meant to be fun and messy!
