Simple T is for Turkey Craft for Kids
November is all about turkeys in our classroom, and we love gobbling up all the fun turkey activities that come with it! One of my absolute favorite ways to practice beginning sounds is with our T is for Turkey activities, especially the adorable turkey craft that doubles as an alphabet mnemonic. This alphabet craft is always a class favorite and makes a pretty cute fall bulletin board display. From hands-on sorting games to fine motor-boosting crafts, these turkey activities for kids are packed with playful learning!

T is for Turkey Craft Prep
This T is for Turkey craft can be prepped in just a few simple steps.
First, copy the large letter T onto brown construction paper.
Next, copy the feathers onto various colors of construction paper. Each student will need five feathers.
Then, copy the eyes onto white cardstock and the beak onto orange construction paper.
Finally, print the pictures that begin with the letter T on regular copy paper. Then, cut along the dotted line so each student receives a half sheet with all five pictures.
Be sure to also prep the pocket chart sort and the “T is for Turkey” game ahead of time by printing and laminating (optional) the materials.
T is for Turkey Pocket Chart Sort
Before completing our turkey craft, we complete a whole class T is for Turkey pocket chart sort.
For this beginning sound sorting activity, the students students work together to sort picture cards into two categories: words that begin with Tt and words that begin with Dd.
Once we complete our whole class sort, I send students off to complete their own T is for Turkey sort. The students strengthen their fine motor skills as they color, cut, glue, and sort the beginning sounds.
T is for Turkey Game
After we finish our sort, it is time to play a game!
Working with a partner, students will shuffle the picture cards and place them face down in a stack. Taking turns, each student will draw a card, identify the beginning sound, and place it in the correct box. The first player to cover all of their letters wins!
After students have a solid grasp of how to play, you can easily use this lotto game as a literacy center, morning work activity, or early finisher activity in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving break.
T is for Turkey Craft Directions
Once students can identify words that begin with the letter T, it’s time to create our T is for Turkey craft!
First, students will color the picture cards using crayons or colored pencils. Next, they’ll cut along the dotted lines. Once all five pictures have been cut out with scissors, they’ll glue each one onto a different colored feather.
Then, students will cut out their large letter T, along with the eyes and beak. You can also provide each student with a small piece of red construction paper to cut out a snood for their turkey.
Once all of the pieces have been cut, it’s time to assemble the turkey craft! First, I like to model how to fan out the feathers and glue them behind the letter T.
Then, I demonstrate how to attach the eyes, followed by the beak, making sure to show how to glue it so it still opens.
After the turkey crafts are finished, I love displaying them on our fall bulletin board. They also look great hung around the classroom or outside in the hallway!
