How to Catch a Turkey Procedural Writing Activity

After reading this book, the students are always excited to share their own witty ideas on how they would catch a turkey.

To capture these creative ideas, we create a whole class brainstorming anchor chart.

Then, we create an additional anchor chart which models the procedural writing activity.

I like to prep the ‘bones’ for this anchor chart ahead of time, including the title, transition words, and a cute picture of a turkey.

As we devise our whole class plan for catching a turkey, we work on stating our sentence(s) verbally before recording it on paper.

Once our whole class example is complete, I like to have students practice sharing their plan with an elbow buddy before going off to work on their procedural writing piece independently.

Students have the option to illustrate each step, or you can print the lined version and they can illustrate and write each step.
