Adorable Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Craft for Name Practice
Share this Post
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, will there be enough room… for all the letters in your name? This fun and engaging Chicka Chicka Boom Boom craft is the perfect way to kick off back-to-school season while helping students learn to recognize and sequence the letters in their names! Inspired by the beloved story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr., this activity combines name practice with a hands-on art project that’s sure to be a classroom favorite. As students build their very own coconut trees and climb each letter up the trunk, they’ll not only reinforce early literacy skills, but also start learning each other’s names—making it a great icebreaker for the first week of school!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Craft Prep
In order for this Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Craft to be a success, there is a little bit of prep needed!
First, you will need to decide which version of the craft you will create. There is a small version with a printable response page, as well as a large version of just the craft.
Both versions will fit on a 9×12 inch sheet of construction paper. I prefer to use black as our background, so our coconut name trees pop!

You will want to copy the leaves on green construction paper and the tree trunk on brown. You will also want to copy the coconuts on a lighter brown/tan piece of construction paper.
I like to quickly cut the pieces apart, so I can easily pass them out to the students. Then, they can cut the pieces on their own to strengthen fine motor scissor skills.

If you are doing the small version of the craft, you will want to copy the printable response sheet on regular copy paper and use a paper cutter to slice each sheet.
Ready for the magical next step?!
With the editable template, you will type out each student’s name. Then you will copy the letters on regular copy paper. The students will be responsible for coloring and cutting apart the letters in their name.
There are two additional student pages that accompany this Chicka Chicka Boom Boom craft. One you can simply print, and the other you type out each student’s name and then print.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Before we start making our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom craft, we read “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” by Bill Martin Jr.
“Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” is a beloved children’s book that introduces the alphabet in a lively and rhythmic way. Young readers are encouraged to partake in the playful journey, as the letters of the alphabet climb up a coconut tree.
After reading this story, we discuss how our names are made up of letters. I share how we will be creating a craft where we will count the number of letters in our name as we add them to our own coconut tree!
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Directions
I like to do a lot of modeling with this name craft!
First, we construct our coconut tree. We glue our trunk onto the black construction paper before adding the leaves. Next, we add three coconuts on top of the leaves.

Then, we color the letters in our name with colored pencils or crayons before cutting out each letter.

On our table top (or desk), we sequence the letters in our name. I have them mix and fix their names several times before gluing the letters around the tree.
If you went with the smaller version of this craft, students will then write their name on the printable response sheet before gluing it under their coconut tree.

For added practice, students can complete the optional student sheets where they color the letters in their name and/or trace the letters in their name.
Once our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom craft is complete, I will either hang them in our classroom or as a hallway display outside our classroom.
