To begin, students each bring in an apple to investigate. We start by exploring math concepts, estimating and measuring the apple’s height, weight, and circumference with tools like linking cubes, chain links, and a balance scale. Then, we cut open the apples to count and graph the seeds, followed by a fun taste test where students graph their favorite type of apple.

Apple Crafts #2: Torn Paper Apple Craft

This simple torn paper apple craft is a fall favorite for preschool, kindergarten, and even first grade! It’s perfect for strengthening fine motor skills while exploring apples.

To start, trace an apple onto black construction paper for each student.

Then, give them squares of red, yellow, or green paper for the apple, along with brown and green for the stem and leaf, and show them how to carefully tear the paper into small pieces. This tearing is excellent fine motor practice!

Finally, have students add their name and display their apples on a bulletin board for a fun, festive classroom decoration for fall.

Apple Crafts #4: Seasons of an Apple Tree

This seasons of an apple tree craft is a meaningful way to help students understand how apple trees change throughout the year, while also incorporating a variety of art materials and techniques.

Students create a tree for each of the four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Each section uses a different medium, making the craft both engaging and visually appealing.

For the fall tree, students tear pieces of red, orange, and yellow construction paper and glue them onto the tree to represent changing leaves. This also helps strengthen fine motor skills.

For the winter tree, students draw bare branches and add small pieces of pulled-apart cotton balls to create the look of snow on the branches and ground.

For the spring tree, students draw and color a tree, then add pink tissue paper to represent blossoms. You can have them crumple the tissue paper into small pieces or wrap it around the end of a pencil to create a twisted, flower-like effect.

For the summer tree, students use a Q-tip dipped in red paint to dot apples onto the tree. This is always a class favorite and adds a fun, hands-on painting element.

Students can label each section (spring, summer, fall, winter) using pre-printed labels or by writing them on their own.

This craft pairs perfectly with any read-aloud about apples or apple trees through the seasons and makes a beautiful display for your classroom! One of my personal favorites is The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons.

Apple Crafts #5: Life Cycle of an Apple Craft

To start, prep the craft by copying the apple template on red paper, the stem on brown, and the leaf on green, along with the life cycle stages on white paper. Before jumping into the craft, take some time to read a few apple life cycle books and discuss each stage so students have a strong foundation.

As a dedicated Kindergarten teacher for nearly 20 years, I believe the words “fun, play, and creativity” can sit right alongside the words “developmentally appropriate, engaging, and rigorous.” Learning is meant to be fun and messy!
