Finding centers that are both fun and functional can be a challenge—especially at the start of the year when routines are still forming and attention spans are short! That’s why I created these Kindergarten centers for September that feel like play, but are packed with meaningful practice. These centers reinforce beginning of the year math and literacy concepts, all while being easy to prep, simple for students to use, and engaging from start to finish!
Math Kindergarten Centers for September
These kindergarten centers for September are perfect for your center rotations—and the best part? They double as morning work or early finisher activities, making them super versatile!
Each center activity includes kid-friendly “I Can” visual direction cards and printable response sheets—perfect for promoting independence and making differentiation a breeze!

School Supply Heights
For this first math center, the students will work on comparing and ordering the height of school supplies.
Lunch Numbers
The students will subitize with finger counts by counting the fingers on each milk carton and then match the correct lunch sack to each carton.
Supply Patterns
This center focuses on four types of patterns: AB, ABB, AAB, and ABC. Students will extend each pattern with the correct school supply. There is a more challenging option included making it easy to differentiate.
Making Five
The students will make fine, as they count the colored circles on the five frame and complete the number sentence.
Bus Stop Digits
Using a dry erase marker, the students will trace the numbers on the bus cards.
Apple Shapes
For this Apple Shapes center, the students will match an apple card containing a shape with an apple tree card containing a real-life example of that shape.
Apple Basket Playdough
The students will use playdough to form the numeral. Then, they will roll the correct number of small apples to fill the basket.
Missing Apples
To work on ordering numbers, the students will place the missing apple on the cards to complete the number order.
Basket of Apples
For this center, the students will count the number of apples in the basket and find the matching apple tree.
Baking Apple Ten Frames
First, the students will count the number of apples on the ten frame. Then, they will match the pie to the correct oven.
Literacy Kindergarten Centers for September
The math centers may be classroom favorites, but don’t miss out on these hands-on literacy activities—they’re just as engaging and perfect for back-to-school fun!
Alphabet Tracing
Using a dry erase marker, the students will trace the upper and lowercase letters on the cards.
Juice Box Syllables
The students will sort 24 cards based on the number of syllables in the word.
Build the Word
This literacy center is great for blending onset and rime of short a CVC words! The students will combine two cards (onset and rime) to build each word before completing one of the two printable response sheets.
Beginning Sound Buses
Students will drive the bus to the school house with the correct beginning sound, during this literacy center.
Backpack Rhymes
To make a rhyming pair, the students will match a backpack and a notebook!
Apple Sort
For this literacy center, the students will sort the apple cards to the correct apple tree, depending on if it is a sentence, word, or letter.
Apple Sounds
This center is great for working on beginning sounds, during which students make a whole apple by matching two apple halves.
Popsicle Stick Letters
At this center, students will build letters using standard and mini size popsicle sticks.
Ordering Alphabet Apples
To work on alphabetical order, the students will say each letter on the apple basket before placing them in order. This is a great center activity to complete on the floor or on a table.
Caramel Apple Matching
For this final literacy center, the students will work on matching upper and lowercase letters.
