Swap out those leprechaun traps and messy leprechaun tricks with these engaging St. Patrick’s Day activities and centers for kindergarten! Your little leprechauns will love solving “The Case of the Hidden Gold” St. Patrick’s Day escape room while they review important math and literacy skills. Students will receive clues and narrow down the suspects, as they attempt to unveil which tricky leprechaun has stolen the gold!
St. Patrick’s Day Escape Room
Students will be highly engaged as they independently complete six to eight different math and literacy centers with The Case of the Hidden Gold!
Before diving into the St. Patrick’s Day activities, be sure to set the stage with this note:
St. Patrickโs Day,
Is finally here!
The leprechaun,
Has disappeared!
Before he left,
He hid the gold.
There was no one,
That he told.
He made himself,
A great disguise.
If you find him,
You get his prize!
After the stage is set, it’s time to craft the students’ case files. These files can be made using either file folders or a large sheet of construction paper folded in half.
While students color the front cover, staple the “Suspect Elimination” sheet on the inside of the folder. Once the cover is complete, they can glue them to the outside of the folder.
Just like true detectives, these case files will house all of their completed St. Patrick’s Day activities and detective work!
St. Patrick’s Day Activities Set Up
Place each challenge in a manila envelope. If you don’t have manila envelopes, no worries! Set up each activity in a bin or tub instead.
If you prefer to eliminate the mystery element, you can simply use these as traditional math and literacy centers.
To solve the mystery, the students need to finish six or eight distinct math and literacy centers.
After successfully completing each challenge, they’ll obtain a clue from the culprit. Each challenge narrows down the list of suspects, eliminating one from consideration.
Upon completing all the challenges, only one suspect will be left, and the case will be solved!
Literacy St. Patrick’s Day Activities
Curious about the literacy skills students will practice? Take a sneak peek at the literacy challenges.
At the “Coin Challenge,” the students will sort the pictures by beginning blend (bl, cl, pl & sl).
Once they arrive at the “Rainbow Challenge,” they will decode the silent e words by matching the picture to the word.
To solve the “Leprechaun Challenge,” the students will stretch out the word and substitute the middle sound.
As they complete the “Hat Challenge,” the students will build each sentence and write the missing word.
Math St. Patrick’s Day Activities
Of course, we have to take a sneak peek at my favorite subject! Here are the math activities the students will encounter.
At the “Horseshoe Challenge,” the students use the ten frames to determine each number 11-20.
As they arrive at the “Pot of Gold Challenge,” they will count the base ten blocks and find the number that matches.
The students will identify the 3D shapes and their corresponding face, at the “Shape Challenge.”
The final math challenge, the “Shamrock Challenge,” involves the students measuring each sweet treat using shamrocks.
