10 Not So Scary Room on the Broom Halloween Center Activities

Room on the Broom is one of my favorite Halloween read alouds! Throughout the month of October, I introduce a variety of Room on the Broom activities and crafts. Among those activities, these math and literacy Room on the Broom Halloween center activities are some of my favorites! Students are able to review important math and literacy skills, all while engaging in not-so-scary Halloween centers.

Room on the Broom Halloween Center Activities Prep

Prep is quick and easy for these Room on the Broom center activities! I like to prep everything at the beginning of October, so they are ready to go. Not only can you use these ten centers as center activities, but you can also use them as a replacement or added bonus to your classroom Halloween party.

For the five math and five literacy centers, I prefer to print all of the materials on card stock and laminate for durability. Each center features one of the characters or elements from the story!

Next, I cut out all of the pieces and put each center into a bin. A basket or baggie would work great as well.

Then, I print a class set of the student response sheets. These pages are optional, but are a nice follow-up activity to check for student understanding.

Literacy Room on the Broom Halloween Center Activities

Here is a sneak peek at the five literacy Room on the Broom Halloween center activities!

At the “Brewing Up Rhymes” center, the students will recognize rhyming words as they match the cauldrons that rhyme.

For a fun whole group activity, give one cauldron to each student. Have the students walk around the room to find their matching rhyming partner. Depending on the number of students you have in your classroom, you may need to remove some pairs of cauldrons.

For the “Cauldron Full of Syllables” center, the students will count and sort the number of syllables.

With the “Under the Witch’s Hat” center, the students will segment CVC words. This center is differentiated by three levels. The students will either identify the beginning sound, identify the ending sound, or stretch out the word and write the sounds that they hear.

Use letter tiles, magnetic letters, or even a dry erase marker to fill in the missing sound(s).

The students will listen for the beginning sound and match the dog to the correct doghouse at the “Bow Wow Beginning Sounds” center. You could also use these cards to play a fun game of Memory!

During the “Colorful Birds” center, the students will practice sorting by color as they match the birds and birdhouses.

Math Room on the Broom Halloween Center Activities

Not only are there five literacy centers, but there are also five math Room on the Broom Halloween center activities. Here are the math centers that are included.

The students will practice 1:1 counting at the “Cauldron Counting” center, as they count the bubbles, place the correct number of bubbles on the ten frame, and write the number inside the cauldron. Toss in some tweezers for extra fine motor practice!

At the “Ten Frame Stars” center, the students will work on subitizing with ten frames. They will count the stars and color the ten frame to match. I like to hang the cards around the room for a fun “write the room” activity!

For the “Froggy Shapes” center, the students will work on identifying 2D shapes as they color code each shape with the correct color.

The students will work on sequencing numbers from 1-10 with the “Build a Broomstick” center. First, they will color the broomstick. Then, they will cut it into strips. Last, they will glue the strips in order from 1-10 to build the broomstick.
