Fire Truck Read Aloud

Before we start our fire truck craft for kids, I love to read “Big Frank’s Fire Truck” by Leslie McGuire!

This fire safety book follows Big Frank, a fire truck, and his crew as they carry out their daily routine, responding to calls and assisting those in need. Students get an inside look at the workings of a fire station and the various tools and techniques used by firefighters to extinguish fires and perform rescues. The book also highlights the importance of teamwork and the bravery of firefighters when confronting danger.

After reading “Big Frank’s Fire Truck”, we label each part of our fire truck with just words.

Then, we work on completing this fire truck anchor chart as a whole group!

First, we identify the beginning sound of each part of the fire truck as we attach the labels to the anchor chart.

Once we are finished labeling all the parts with individual words, the students work in groups to construct a complete sentence. Using the sentence start “I can see the…,” each student will write one word in the sentence. They will reference the labeled anchor chart to help them write the last word in the sentence.

Then, we gather back on the carpet and label the parts of our fire truck anchor chart with these complete sentences.

Fire Truck Craft for Kids Prep

In just a few short steps, this fire truck craft for kids will be prepped and ready to go!

There are two versions of this fire truck craft for kids. Students can build the sentence “I can see the fire truck,” or they can label the fire truck.

Before making copies, decide which option is best for your students.

First, copy the fire truck on red construction paper or card stock.

Next, print the wheels on black construction paper or card stock. You can also use them as a tracer.

Then, use white construction paper or card stock for the window and yellow construction paper or card stock for the ladder.

After that, you will need green construction paper for the hose and blue construction paper for the siren.

Last, print the sentence strip or labels on regular copy paper.

I like to, then, do a rough cut around the wheels, window, ladder, hose, and siren, so they are separated and I can easily pass them out to each student.

With just a little modeling, this fire truck craft is simple enough for preschool and kindergarten students.

Next, the students cut out the ladder, the hose, and the siren.

After all of the fire truck craft parts are cut out, it is time to assemble.

First, glue the two wheels onto the fire truck. I like to demonstrate how to overlap the wheels, so that they are on top of the truck.

Next, use a glue stick to adhere the window and hose onto the fire truck craft.

In the middle of the truck, add the yellow ladder. I also like to have the students draw black lines for the slats of the ladder using a black crayon.

Finally, I explain how to attach the siren by gluing it a little bit behind the top of the truck.

Once the truck is made, it is time to cut out the sentence or the labels (depending on which craft option you went with).

If you went with the sentences, I like to practice reading the sentence out loud. Then, I have the students say the sentence to a friend. We practice mixing and fixing the sentence on their desk before gluing it on the fire truck. All of this extra practice helps ensure that the students correctly assemble the sentence on the fire truck craft for kids!

As a dedicated Kindergarten teacher for nearly 20 years, I believe the words “fun, play, and creativity” can sit right alongside the words “developmentally appropriate, engaging, and rigorous.” Learning is meant to be fun and messy!
