Celebrate the end of the year countdown with an Ice Cream Day! These ice cream activities review math and literacy skills, all with a mysterious twist! With the ice cream theme centers from The Ice Cream Shop Mystery End of the Year Escape Room, your students will be highly engaged as they complete 6 or 8 different challenges to eliminate the suspects and discover who has stolen the sundae supplies!

These Ice Cream Day Escape Room activities can be used for an Ice Cream Day, an End of Year Party or end of the year ice cream themed math and literacy centers.

Make the end of the year a memorable (and learning-filled) celebration with these ice cream day end of the year escape room activities!

Set the stage with a note from the ice cream shop attendant:

I have a special treat.

Yes, it is true.

But first I need,

Some help from you!

The supplies are lost,

As you can see.

Who has them?

It’s a mystery!

Solve each challenge,

Along the way.

So we can build,

A big sundae!

After the students complete each challenge, they will receive a clue from the culprit. A suspect will be eliminated after each challenge. Once all of the ice cream day centers have been completed, they will have eliminated all but one suspect!

There are 4 math and 4 literacy ice cream theme centers included. Black and white option included. Targeted skills:

  • recognizing rhymes
  • counting syllables
  • identifying digraphs
  • isolating medial sounds
  • 1:1 counting and subitizing numbers 1-10
  • adding fluently within 6
  • modeling subtraction problems
  • extending patterns

The Challenges:

  1. Spoon Challenge – Count the syllables for each picture.
  2. Sundae Challenge – Use ice cream scoops to model each number sentence. Solve the problem and write the answer.
  3. Milkshake Challenge – Listen for the beginning digraph (ch, sh, th, wh), and sort each picture under the correct milkshake.
  4. Scoop Challenge – Count the scoops and match it to the correct ten frame cone.
  5. Truck Challenge – Listen for the middle sound, and sort each picture under the correct ice cream truck.
  6. Sprinkles Challenge – Model the subtraction problem by covering the correct number of sprinkles. Solve the problem and write the answer.
  7. Cone Challenge – Match the pictures that rhyme to build each ice cream cone.
  8. Popsicle Challenge – Say the pattern. Then, extend each pattern.

I can’t say enough great things about this product!!! My students and I really enjoyed all the activities. We spread this out over a few days and they really bought into the mystery. Once we solved it, we celebrated with an ice cream party! So much fun for the end of the year.

My students loved using this resource as part of their class wide behavior system reward. It was a great way for them to review some important concepts learned throughout the year while being super engaged and excited to do the work! They loved that they got to solve a mystery while also earning their supplies/ingredients for the sweet treat reward. Amazing resource!

  12. Angela C. –

We used this as the kick off activity for our end of the year count down! I kept my students in their table groups and they worked together as teams to complete each of the centers activities. I posted each of the suspects on the whiteboard and before we even started, they were making their predictions. As they worked through each center and got more and more clues, they got more and more excited. Once every group got their last clue, we all came together as a class to eliminate each of the suspects. When we found the culprit, we ended with an ice cream party. This resource was truly the perfect way to work through/keep them engaged for a full day at this point (the end) of the year. Thank you so much!
