Description
Help build number sense, number fluency and subitizing skills with rekenreks! Use these cards alone or with a rekenrek board! Plus, includes a response sheet! Perfect for whole group instruction, as a center activity, or with small group intervention!
For whole group instruction, these cards can be used for fluency practice (subitizing) at the beginning of your math lesson. Simply flash the card real quickly, and then ask the class what they saw on the card. Some students may automatically give you the sum of the top and bottom row. In this case, I will ask how they knew it was that particular number.
During small group instruction, discuss what number you see on each row and what total number this makes. I also like to rebuild the rekenrek using unifix cubes or some other manipulative. If the rekenrek showed 1 + 3, the students would use one red cube and three of another color. Students will then write the number sentence.
I have also included a response sheet! The students can color the rekenrek to match the card, and then write the number sentence!

I will say that this has to be taught. The beads on both sides can confuse some learners. But other wise great product.

I used these rekenrek cards with Kindergarten students in my Math centres. We first started by building our own rekenreks and then in small groups, I would distribute the cards for students to demonstrate their basic addition and subtraction skills. It’s a great way for students to communicate their thinking!
