Do you read the story “How To Catch a Leprechaun” by Adam Wallace for St. Patrick’s Day? It has always been a crowd favorite with my students!

In the story, the kids work hard to create the perfect leprechaun trap, which is the perfect segue into procedural writing!

First, I have my students devise a plan for trapping the leprechaun. We use the language “first, next, then, last.”

Then, we get to work on writing the steps for how to catch the leprechaun.

Of course, we turn this procedural writing into an adorable leprechaun craft that we hang in the hallway!

Isn’t he so cute?!

Does anyone have spring conferences? During our parent teacher conferences, I like to have the parents fill out a little “parent pride” note while they are waiting.

I’ll read these to the kiddos at the end of the week. Their faces are priceless! Be proud! Shout it loud!

If for some reason one of the kiddos doesn’t have one, I go ahead a jot them a note of why I am so proud!

I love this rainbow craft, because it works on strengthening those scissor skills as the students snip the colored strips into smaller pieces!

For this one, I just give the students a strip of each color. I show them how to snip the strip into smaller pieces. Then, they glue the pieces into an arch shape. If you want, you can draw the top arch with a white crayon, so they have a starting place.

While St. Patrick’s Day may not be a major school celebration, I enjoy infusing some leprechaun-inspired fun and other St. Patrick’s Day activities into my lesson plans. Instead of creating cumbersome leprechaun traps, I encourage students to devise their own written plans for trapping the tricky leprechaun!

After reading the story How to Catch a Leprechaun by Adam Wallace, we record our ideas for trapping these clever creatures on our anchor chart.

I prep the ‘bones’ for this anchor ahead time, including the title, transition words, and cute leprechaun picture.

In the last decade, I’ve witnessed more and more

In the last decade, I’ve witnessed more and more students facing challenges with fine motor skills. Our little learners are spending more time swiping screens and less and less time coloring with markers, holding pencils, and mastering scissor skills.

To counteract the increased time spent on devices, I use a variety of everyday classroom supplies (that I already have on hand) as fine motor tools!
