Now that it’s summertime, it’s time for me to catch up on my at-home craft projects! One thing I’ve been wanting to do is create some type of welcome sign for our front door. I knew I wanted something with a farmhouse feel, since the interior of our home also has a farmhouse vibe. Because our front door is dark brown, I opted for a farmhouse wreath with a vintage white background. Keep reading to learn how to create this simple DIY farmhouse wreath door hanger!

DIY FARMHOUSE WREATH DOOR HANGER
STEP 1: PAINT
Let’s get started! First, sand the circle sign until it feels smooth. Then, apply the first coat of chalk paint. You can also use Rust-Oleum® Matte Chalked Finish Spray Paint. Let dry. Sand the paint until it is smooth. Apply another coat of paint. Continue applying paint and sanding in between coats until the sign is fully covered in paint. You will want to make sure it has a smooth finish before applying a satin sealer.
STEP 2: DESIGN SPACE
Next, open the “welcome” lettering in Cricut’s free Design Space. Simply click the “Make It” button, unless you need to customize the size to fit your sign. This design is sized to fit a wood circle with a diameter of 18 inches. Press the “Continue” button to connect the Cricut Joy to your device. There are no buttons on the machine, so it will connect to your desktop or mobile device via Bluetooth.
STEP 3: MATLESS CUTTING
Now, you are ready to cut out the decal using Cricut Joy Smart Vinyl. Cricut Design Space will tell you exactly how much material you need to complete your project. Since we are using Smart Vinyl, there is no need for measuring or placing this material on a mat. In the case of our farmhouse wreath, the Cricut Joy will run all 16.25 inches through the machine. It will literally do all of the work! It’s that smart!
Plus, there is no need to adjust or change the blade! The Cricut Joy does not use specialty scoring tools or blades. It uses an all-purpose cutting blade, but it can still cut a myriad of materials, like Smart Vinyl, Smart Iron-On, Smart Label Writable Paper, Smart Label Writable Vinyl, Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets, Insert Cards, Adhesive-Backed Deluxe Paper, paper, card stock, poster board, and more! Plus, it can cut designs up to 4.5 inches wide and 20 feet long! The best part is that the Cricut Joy is designed to cut Cricut Smart Materials without a cutting mat… the demise to so many cutting projects! Can I get an Amen?!
Simply select “Smart Vinyl – Permanent” and load the vinyl into the machine. The Cricut Joy will automatically sense when the material is close and pull it into the machine. It’s okay if it is a little crooked, since the Cricut Joy will straighten the alignment of the material. Click the “Go” button to begin cutting the decal. Once the Cricut Joy is finished cutting the decal, follow the prompts on your screen to unload the vinyl.
STEP 4: WEEDING & TRANSFER
After you’ve unloaded the cut decal, you will need to weed the design using the weeding tool from the Starter Tool Set. Now, you are ready to add transfer tape to the top of the decal.
Carefully place the decal onto the painted circle by centering it horizontally. It will not be centered vertically. I placed mine just below center. Smooth out the decal using the scraper tool, and remove the transfer tape.
STEP 5: FINISHING TOUCHES
It’s finally time to add the finishing touches to your DIY farmhouse wreath door hanger! First, attach the jute rope to the back of the sign.
Trim the eucalyptus stems, and place them above the lettering. You will want to angle them downward in an upside down V shape. Secure the stems using a staple gun. Repeat these steps to secure the cotton stems.
Using the wired edge ribbon, make a bow for your farmhouse wreath door hanger. Place this bow centered on top of the eucalyptus and cotton stems.
Now, hang your wreath and sit back to admire your beautiful creation! Your guests are sure to feel welcome as they enter your home!
