Dr. Seuss Birthday Party Ideas for the Classroom

Cultivating a love for reading in the primary grades is one of our ultimate goals, and what better way to help instill this love than by celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday to help kick off Read Across America!  Of course, our Dr. Seuss birthday celebration had to be just like any other birthday party, complete with themed plates, napkins, cups, party favors, and more!  I even made some DIY truffula tree centerpieces to help set the stage.  Most all of our Dr. Seuss birthday party supplies came from Party City, as Party City wants to help teachers celebrate the 113th birthday of America’s favorite author, Dr. Seuss and the “Hat’s Off to Reading” campaign.

DR. SEUSS BIRTHDAY PARTY DECORATIONS

Of course, no Dr. Seuss birthday party would be complete without some festive party decorations.  I set the stage for Read Across America with this wooden “Keep On READING” sign that I hung by the door.  As soon as the kiddos arrived that morning, they noticed the sign and were eager to come inside.

I decided to make the party setup relatively simple.  I actually set up all of the decorations in about 20 minutes.  The plastic, red table cloths coordinated perfectly with the Dr. Seuss paper plates, cups, and napkins from Party City; while the DIY truffula tree centerpieces helped pull the overall look of the tables together.

DR. SEUSS DIY TRUFFULA TREES

After seeing so many DIY tuffula trees on Pinterest, I knew I wanted to make a smaller version that would work as a centerpiece for my table set up.  I really do feel like they are the perfect added touch.  You can read more about how I made these DIY truffula trees here.

DR. SEUSS BIRTHDAY PARTY TREATS

The Dr. Seuss birthday party treats were definitely the hit of the party.  I purchased the cupcakes at Meijer, because who has time to bake… not me!  I wanted to added some red cupcake wrappers to the bottom along with a Thing 1 or Thing 2 round cutout, so that the cupcakes looked more like the actual characters.  Maybe, I’ll have time for that next year.  I did, however, have time to whip up some green eggs and ham pretzels.  Of course, I tricked my kiddos into thinking we were eating real green eggs and ham!  It was quite funny to see the look on their faces when I pulled out the pretzel treat.  You can read how I made these DIY green eggs and ham here.

DR. SEUSS BIRTHDAY PARTY FAVORS

Before beginning our Dr. Seuss birthday party celebration, we needed a festive party hat… and what would be more festive than the Cat in the Hat’s classic striped hat?!

We even had a few photo props to help make the celebration a little more fun.  My favorite was the mustache from the Lorax.

Since our Read Across America activities will extend into the whole month of March, I’m actually saving the rest of the party favors until the end of the month.  Every year, I hold a reading contest in which the students are asked to keep track of how many minutes they read each night.  They record these minutes on our “March Is Reading Month Contest” calendar.  At the end of the month, they will total the number of minutes and bring their calendars back to school.  Every student who reads at least 250 minutes receives a prize.  This year, they’ll be getting Dr. Seuss pencils, notepads and award medals!
